I am a Senior Lecturer in Ethics and Public Governance at the Wits School of Governance, Johannesburg, South Africa. My research is in the discipline of analytic political theory and focuses on global injustice and democratic citizenship. My account of a state-based but globally-oriented citizenship is published in the monograph, Citizenship in a Globalised World. Other research interests include South African citizenship law and practice, public sector ethics, political consumerism, and methods of political theory. In 2023 I was awarded a Y1 Research Rating for emerging scholars by the South African National Research Foundation.

Between 2019 and 2022 I was an Iso Lomso Fellow at the Stellenbosch Institute of Advanced Study. In conjunction with this fellowship, I was awarded a Hamburg Institute of Advanced Study fellowship and research residency in September – December 2022. During this residency I began work on my current research project: “What we owe to each other when others owe us so much: global injustice and inter-state duties in the Global South.”

Before joining the Wits School of Governance in May 2021, I was a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Fort Hare. Previously, I was a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute (Sept 2015 – Dec 2016). I completed my DPhil in 2015 at Nuffield College, University of Oxford, working with Prof. David Miller and Prof. Cecile Fabre.
